Rich Corkran, a candidate for Delegate in District 9B, is a lifelong Democrat with strong ties to his community. He is seeking to leverage his past and present work with Howard County citizens, students and leaders to secure a position that affords him the opportunity to make an impactful difference on the area he knows and loves.
Background & Education
Corkran was born in 1947 on the eastern shore of Maryland, just 30 miles away from the Chesapeake Bay. He is a devoted Democrat with a penchant for learning, as evidenced by his rich educational background. Corkran attended high school in Caroline County and in 1965 enrolled at Franklin and Marshall College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Government. During his longtime teaching career, he earned two Masters Degrees from Johns Hopkins University – one in Administration and the other in Technology Education.
Family
Corkran and his wife, Maryann, have been married for more than 34 years and have two grown children, Christine and Michael. An active parent while his children were growing up, Corkran served on the PTA Council of Worthington Elementary. He was vice-president for one year and president for another on the council.
Career
After spending 38 years teaching – 31 within the Howard County Public School System – Corkran retired in 2007. He taught in Baltimore City Public Schools for one year before beginning a six-year tenure at Glenelg Country School in Glenelg, Md. Corkran then spent four years teaching at Patapsco Middle School in Howard County before settling in at Hammond High School for 27 years. At Hammond, Corkran taught mathematics and computer science, and also coached soccer, cross country, tennis, track and boys basketball.
Affiliations
Corkran is currently the president of the Brampton Hills Community Association where he has lived for more than 29 years and is a member of the GlenMar United Methodist Church in Ellicott City. He has served in many positions within the church, including on the Church Council. He is presently on the Board of Directors of the Early Learning Center.
